Formula E taps Heron Preston to rethink motorsport fashion through recycled materials

Formula E — the world’s premier global motorsport series for all-electric, open-wheel single-seater race cars — is expanding into fashion through a new partnership with Heron Preston. The designer will create a new line of merchandise, rethinking motorsport fashion through recycled materials.

Announced on Monday, the partnership is primarily focused on Preston’s eX-Ray concept, which transforms textile waste into new fabrics through regenerative braking.

“I’ve always been interested in taking materials, processes and ideas from unexpected places and finding new ways to give them purpose. Working with Formula E gives me the opportunity to bring that approach into a world where performance is everything. We’re looking at how apparel can be thoughtfully designed from the material up, balancing function, quality and a more considered approach to how things are made,” Preston said in a statement.

The first pieces of the Formula E x Heron Preston collaboration will be showcased at ComplexCon Los Angeles on Saturday and Sunday alongside a GEN4 car featuring an exclusive Preston-designed livery.

“Heron and Formula E share a curiosity about how things work and how they can be made better. In racing, we push for greater performance while using energy and materials more efficiently. Heron brings a complementary perspective, exploring what existing materials can become through design. This partnership gives us the opportunity to develop those ideas together and apply them to the products people wear,” Ellie Norman, chief marketing officer at Formula E, said.

Preston reclaimed full ownership of his namesake brand in November 2025, relaunching it in December. The designer is also known for co-founding the streetwear brand Been Trill alongside Virgil Abloh and Justin Saunders, among others.
