Teen Vogue and Parsons team up for online fashion course

London - Fashion magazine Teen Vogue is teaming up with the Parsons School of Design at The New School to offer a new online fashion course aimed at helping millennials launch or transition into a career in fashion.

Titled 'Certificate in Fashion Industry Essentials,' the course is aimed at 13 to 35 year olds, looking to expand their fashion industry knowledge. The course, which will be accepting its first students in September and will offer five courses in Visual Style, Design, Production, Media and Marketing. The semester-long course will cost 599 dollars, which can be paid in full or on a three-month payment plan, and will all be online.

The course has been specially designed by Parsons and Teen Vogue to cover those elements that aspiring fashion professionals need to know in order to lay the foundation for a career in the fashion industry. The online education program will teach students how to hone their focus within the world of fashion, how the fashion industry works, and how to build a personal career brand and network.

Along with the required reading, the interactive course will feature video lessons taught by the Parsons faculty, as well as real-life advice from Teen Vogue experts and industry leaders, including Teen Vogue editor-in-chief Amy Astley, designer Rebecca Minkoff, Parsons’ Francesca Sammaritano, a former fashion designer for Calvin Klein and Aliza Licht, global fashion communications at Donna Karan.

In total, there will be 42 hours of online instruction and self-study, including more than 70 on-demand video lessons taught by more than 20 instructors, and a combination of skills and career-focused assignments. Each assignment is geared toward developing an interview-ready portfolio, which the website for enrolment stresses is the key to a career in fashion.

There are five courses in total, Unlocking Visual Style, Thinking Like a Designer, Understanding Fashion Production, Working in Fashion Media, and Developing Fashion Marketing and PR Skills. Each online course will be 8-10 hours long and will run for 2 weeks. Coursework towards the portfolio will be submitted throughout the course as well as a presentation for evaluation by the courses fashion experts.

The Certificate in Fashion Industry Essentials aims to complement Parsons' other degree and certificate fashion programs by offering a new online educational experience that can help students lay the foundation for the knowledge and skills they will need to get ahead in a rapidly changing and competitive industry. The course is open to international students.
