What to know: Why is Patagonia suing Trump over Utah’s national monuments?

Patagonia has joined a legal challenge against the Trump administration’s decision to reduce two national monuments in Utah, arguing that the move threatens public land protections, Tribal sovereignty and areas of environmental and cultural importance. The outdoor clothing brand announced the lawsuit on September 2, challenging President Donald Trump’s July proclamation reducing Bears Ears National Monument by around 91 percent, as well as also significantly cutting the size of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.
