Fashion

With menswear design getting more and more exciting each season, the Spring/Summer 2016 catwalks were full of inspirational new styles to update the contemporary men's wardrobe. From London and Milan to Paris, key developments included plays on minimal aesthetics and Eastern influences, as masculine looks were tempered with a feel of delicate femininity. Elsewhere, we saw an evolution of utility themes and denim staples, while a range of strong offerings came through from the more unknown brands like Umit Benan and Hood By Air, Here, the catwalk experts at Trendstop.com round up some of the most directional emerging trends to hit the S/S16 menswear runways, complete with examples of influential designers.

An Eastern Inspiration

Eastern aesthetics abound in new season collections, refreshing modern designs with a hint of exoticism and elegance. Craig Green adapted martial arts uniform silhouettes with a striking use of layering and colour, while tunic shapes were fused with sportive textures and detailing at No Editions. Astrid Andersen introduced a luxe element with cherry blossom print satins.

Feminine Focus

Lace, silk and sheer fabrications continue to influence designers, bringing a feminine element to summer menswear. The trend adds softness to formal ensembles, from translucent pastel shirts worn with tailored pants at Dries Van Noten to shimmering golden shapes set off by longline scarves at Burberry. Elsewhere, bold floral prints made a statement on colour pop suiting at Gucci.

Minimal Luxe

A fresh minimal aesthetic could be seen in shows at all three fashion capitals, complete with a strong emphasis on luxurious textures. Coordinated ensembles with clean cuts and subtle details are key, including relaxed pastel-hued tailoring at Damir Doma and Giorgio Armani. Hood By Air added a utility twist with customisable spliced silhouettes.

Utilitarian Uniform

S/S16 sees utilitarian influences dominate, as practical styles become core staples of numerous collections. The runways were busy with multi-pocket jackets, boiler suits and casual coordinations, while design twists added newness in the form of pastel colourways or sporty accessories. Key designers included Umit Benan, Kenzo and Fendi.

Denim Revamp

New denim inspirations came through in a major way in all cities, offering contemporary updates for wardrobe staples. Oversized silhouettes made a statement at Juun.J and Giorgio Armani, as seen in both formal and casual stylings. At Givenchy, detailed denim shirts were paired with kilts in tonal Americana-themed prints.
